Software speed-up

This month SCM Microsystems ships a software-only answer to Pinnacle and Matrox realtime boards. Essentially, the Dazzle Real-Time Video Producer preserves what SCM describes as the "native video pipeline." The software avoids converting footage to RGB, saving processor power. This leftover processor power, in turn, is called upon to power realtime effects previews and support three or more video streams (that's with a 2.4GHz Pentium 4), versus the two streams Adobe claims for Premiere 6.5. Premiere is bundled along with a DV and analog I/O breakout box, Dazzle DVD Complete Deluxe, and Boris FX.

Remote news

At IBC Incite Multimedia showed two new products that capitalize on the portability of Sony's DSR-DU1 recording unit. The 2.5in. FireWire hard drive holds three hours of DVCAM footage, so a laptop-based NLE for rough editing is a perfect fit. Remote Producer and Newsmaker fit that bill. Both applications rely on software codecs for editing low bit-rate proxy video files into EDLs and integrate with Incite's online NLEs. Newsmaker adds tools for creating and editing scripts and lets journalists record pro-quality voiceovers in the field. Remote Producer can also finish projects in the field, rendering background effects and filters.

PLUG IT IN

Turning its Aurora Sky plug-in from a tool for 2D, static Photoshop into a Final Cut Pro and After Effects plug-in was no small task for Digital Anarchy, which devised a way for clouds to move and interact with other elements in a scene. Aurora Sky creates photorealistic skies and clouds, working in 3D space with its own built-in camera. The truly volumetric clouds allow camera "fly-through" and can be shaped with Bezier paths. Texture-mapping to the cloud surfaces means images can be projected onto the clouds and affected by their movement and opacity. The Aurora camera integrates with that of After Effects, updating in the background as if it were part of the scene.

Editing 24p

The first Windows-based NLE out of the gate to support the Panasonic AG-DVX100's 24p and 24p advanced modes is Blade 2 from In-sync. The updated soft-ware's Automated Reverse Telecine function allows users to digitize, edit, and output to MPEG - all in native 24p. Another new feature for version 2 is realtime effects preview via FireWire. Haven't bought the camera yet? In-sync's offering a bundle deal: the software and the camcorder together for $3,499, some $800 below list price. Supplies are reportedly very limited.

Audio turnkey

Laird's line of turnkey editing PCs recently added a digital audio workstation version. DVora Pro Tools includes Digidesign's ubiquitous audio software in the form of Pro Tools LE and either Digi 001 or Digi 002 systems. Both versions ship in the familiar silver Windows XP boxes equipped with easy-to-reach FireWire connections. The 1 RU Digi 001 system includes analog, digital, and MIDI I/O with two mic preamps. Digi 002 adds a control surface with a 32-track interface. The LE version of Pro Tools supports 32 record and playback tracks and 128 MIDI tracks.

Price: $5,999 for Digi 001 system; $6,995 for Digi 002 Mount Marion, N.Y. (845) 339-9555 www.lairdtelemedia.com

Titling for Avid

Inscriber introduces a professional version of its TitleMotion graphics and titling plug-in. TitleMotion Pro adds 3D animated text and effects plus animated textures on text. It ships with over 175 3D text styles and over 100 new titling templates. The AVX plug-in works with Symphony, Media Composer, Xpress, and Xpress DV systems.

Price: $295 for current TitleMotion users; $795 bundled with TitleMotion. Waterloo, Ontario; (519) 570-9111; www.inscriber.com

Update download

Because NewTek centered so much of Video Toaster 2 around software, the company has been able to issue five free downloadable updates in the last year. This time around, NewTek focused on I/O and hardware frame-buffer support for production packages like Pinnacle Commotion, Eyeon Digital Fusion, and Discreet 3ds Max. The company also says that audio signal quality and strength are improved through-out the NLE. A new realtime Gaussian blur filter allows separate keyframeable blurring of the chroma, luma, and alpha components of the clip.

Price: $2,995; upgrade is free San Antonio (210) 370-8000 www.newtek.com
